A one year old’s birthday party isn’t complete without the smash cake! I will show you how to put together the cutest DIY Cookie Monster Smash Cake in less than 10 minutes!
Who remembers watching Sesame Street every weekend?? One of my favorite characters was that lovable Cookie Monster! I felt that Cookie Monster and I shared a bond…which was an obsession with cookies!! Lol! Even though he was a little funny looking (and actually a little scary looking at times lol), I still enjoyed watching him stuff tons of cookies in his mouth! 🙂

When it was time to decide on a theme for my youngest son’s first birthday party, I thought that it would be super cute to do a Cookie Monster theme! He received my cookie obsession gene, so I felt the theme was totally appropriate! Lol! Party planning can be a tough job! You have to organize the decorations, the games, the food, and most importantly, the cake!
In my opinion, smash cake sessions are SOOO cute, but I cringe at the thought of spending tons of money on a small cake that will be destroyed in a matter of seconds! Being that I’m a complete DIY mom, I just had to come up with a more reasonable and frugal option!

I decided to purchase a small, royal blue round layer cake from my local grocery store! I asked them to pipe the icing to mimic hair! Genius, right?!
I wanted to keep the design simple, cute and of course recognizable, so I bought these foam balls (Smoothfoam 12-Pack Balls Crafts Foam for Modeling, 2-Inch, White) for the eyes and a half dozen of premade chocolate chip cookies from the grocery store’s bakery!

I took a black Sharpie and drew black circles on the white foam balls. I placed them on top of the cake, making sure that the black circles were in different directions to mimic Cookie Monster’s crazy, googly eyes!
Once the eyes were in place, I broke a chocolate chip cookie in half and pressed it in the center of the front of the cake. The gives the illusion of Cookie Monster eating a cookie! Clever, huh?! Lol.
