I know what you’re thinking by looking at the pic above…is it Halloween?? If it’s not Halloween, then why is her kid in a Spiderman costume?? Has this mom completely lost her mind? Lol! No, we’re not going trick-or-treating and no, I haven’t lost my mind. I’ve just been encouraging my kid’s creativity!
Let give you a little background info about what’s really going on here! I have two boys, ages 3 and 1. My boys are always exploring new things and using their imagination to go on these crazy adventures! My oldest son, CJ, has always loved superheroes! He loves them all but lately he’s been on a Spiderman kick!
Well this isn’t anything out of the ordinary…I mean, most little boys love Spiderman, right? So I just kinda ignored his new obsession and just smiled as he pretended to fly around the house. A few weeks ago, he found his Halloween costume from last year and decided to put it on. Again, I just smiled and thought it was the cutest thing! And THEN I noticed that he was putting this costume on every day…
At this point, I started to pay a little more attention because he was becoming VERY attached to this costume, not to mention that it really needed to be washed! Also by this time, my husband thought our son was being “weird” and was a little embarrassed that he wanted to wear this costume out of the house!
I finally sat my son down and had a little chat. ( I had to refer to him as Spiderman, by the way!) We talked about superheros and his upcoming birthday party, and then I asked him why did he love Spiderman so much? His response actually shocked me! And made me tear up a little bit…
He said that he wanted to be Spiderman so that he could save people! I asked him what people, he said, “all the people with boos-boos on them so they won’t cry.” He recently got a few “boos-boos” on his legs so I guess he wanted to save people like him! I honestly wasn’t expecting that response from him. I gave him a hug and we talked a little more…
I told him that he was AWESOME and super smart and super strong! I wanted him to understand that he could save people by being his own, awesome self! He could do anything he set his mind to! While playing dress up and pretending to be a superhero is fun, always make sure your kids know that they are super just by being themselves!
