One of my goals for the new year was to increase my family’s physical activity! Because our lives are so busy, we rarely have enough time to do anything else…which includes spending a little more time outdoors and getting active.
As a Registered Dietitian, my family’s health is very important to me. I like to encourage healthful behaviors that will set the tone for a healthy future, such as increasing physical activity and choosing nutritious meals and snacks. One of our favorite snacks is Brainiac™ Kids applesauce.

- Go for a hike or nature walk
Who says taking a long walk has to be boring?? We have a nature trail within walking distance of our home and I like to encourage my kids to take a quick walk afterschool or after dinner. To make our walks more fun and exciting, the kids will bring along their scooters or rollerblades. They usually end up having so much fun that they lose track of time!
- Go on a scavenger hunt
Scavenger hunts are super fun and so easy to do! Simply hide a few things all over the backyard and have the kids race to find each clue. If you want to sneak a little exercise into this activity, include requirements with each clue, like “Hop 4 times before moving on,” or “Make up a funny dance.” My kids get a big kick out of those funny clues!
- Move snack time outdoors
To switch things up a little bit, we like to move snack time outdoors! Sometimes we head to the park or simply hangout on the front porch, which is my kids’ favorite spot! As you can see, getting your kids to spend more time outdoors can actually be a lot of fun! Once you start implementing these ideas into your child’s routine, it will become a part of their active new lifestyle.
